Facilities

The Penn Center welcomes visitors from around the world and is one of the few institutions that can boast such prestigious guests as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recent visitors have included Danny Glover, renowned actor, Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former president William Jefferson Clinton, and Susan Taylor, editor in chief of Essence Magazine.

The Conference Center is comprised of four newly restored residential facilities, and a waterfront Retreat House. It accommodates 85 residential guests, has two meeting halls, Frissell Community House and Darrah Hall, and ten meeting rooms. Overflow accommodations are available for larger groups. Our state of the art Emory S. Campbell Dining Hall features traditional Gullah meals including local favorites such as Shrimp and Grits and Frogmore Stew.

The Center is ideally suited and routinely used for retreats, weddings and wedding parties, writers and writing groups, conferences, meetings and receptions. Incoming residents can work in partnership with the History and Culture Program to develop programming that includes cultural demonstrations such as storytelling, basketry, net making and lectures on the history and culture of the Sea Islands and Penn School. We can be your home away from home in a unique island retreat setting.
