Annual
Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration Showcasing the Unique Cultural Legacy of
the Gullah People and the History of Penn School.
"Come
Jine We" for a down home celebration showcasing the unique cultural legacy
of the Gullah people and history of Penn School on beautiful St. Helena Island,
South Carolina. Held every second weekend in November on the historic campus
of Penn School, the Annual Penn Center Heritage Days Celebration is a community
event welcoming visitors from around the country and around the world. Since
its inception in 1981, the Heritage Days Celebration has grown to a visitorship
of over 20,000.
Designated in 1974 as a National Historic Landmark by the US Department of the
Interior, Penn Center has been a community of history and achievement since 1862.
Located on beautiful St. Helena Island, Penn Center was known as Penn School
for the first 86 years. Founded by Laura M. Towne and Ellen Murray, Penn School
was the first school for newly freed slaves in the south.
The 20th Annual Penn Center
Heritage Days Celebration showcases the cultural heritage of the Gullah people
and explores the world Gullah connection. This
year's theme "Lest We Forget: Penn Celebrates 140 Years of Education for
Freedom."
celebrates centuries of being bound by spiritual, cultural, and family traditions.
Penn Center's current
mission is to preserve and promote the Sea Island history, culture and environment.
We serve as a local, national and international educational resource center,
and act as a catalyst for the development of programs for self-sufficiency. A
sample itinerary is listed below.
