This summer, Penn Center's York W. Bailey Museum invites visitors to experience the powerful storytelling and artistic vision of acclaimed South Carolina folk artist Bruce Ingram in a new solo exhibition, Manifesting the Spirit: The Visionary Art of Bruce Ingram.
On view July 1 through November 30, 2026, the exhibition features a compelling collection of paintings and sculptures that celebrate memory, heritage, and the enduring tradition of African American storytelling in rural South Carolina.
Drawing inspiration from the griot—or oral storytelling—tradition passed down through his family, Ingram transforms generations of lived experience into vibrant works of art. His paintings and sculptures preserve the voices and stories that shaped him, offering visitors an intimate look at the history, resilience, and culture of African American communities in the Lowcountry.
Working with sustainably sourced wood and reclaimed materials, Ingram incorporates objects that carry their own histories into his artwork. These found elements become part of the narrative, connecting past and present while creating richly textured pieces that invite reflection and conversation.
"Bruce Ingram's body of work represents the importance of African American oral histories by using creative and unexpected ways to honor and remember the past."
— Monique de La Tour, Exhibit Curator, York W. Bailey Museum
