Beaufort Town Hall Meeting: A Restorative Conversation in Beaufort County
“The Scott Trust, owner of the Guardian, launched a global program of restorative justice in March 2023 following research which uncovered the connections between the founding investors of the newspaper and transatlantic enslavement. John Edward Taylor, who founded the Guardian in 1821, and his funders all made their wealth from cotton produced in the southern United States. They were all based in Manchester, which grew into a booming 19th-century city largely off the back of the cotton industry. The Scott Trust Legacies of Enslavement program has embarked on a ten year restorative justice initiative with descendant communities centering truth-telling, redress, reconciliation, and repair.
As a part of this ongoing initiative, the US Legacies of Enslavement team invites descendant communities to attend a series of community town hall meetings to help shape the restorative justice program. These meetings will offer an opportunity to learn more about the program, share your experiences, and be a part of a community-led solution that promotes healing and accountability.
Please see below for the August list of meetings. We will host the remaining town halls in North Carolina and Florida in September and October.
