Campus Vibes: Plant Walks, Birthdays and Remembrance
A group of 8th grade students from Atlanta’s The Children’s School spent a few days on the Penn Center campus, stepping into the living history of the Sea Islands.
Through hands on experiences rooted in culture and place, students connected classroom learning to the rich heritage of St. Helena Island.
Students foraged yaupon and prepared traditional tea, then created their own resist dyed shirts during an immersive indigo workshop rooted in West African textile traditions.
Along the way, they explored the lasting impact of indigo and cotton on St. Helena Island, bringing history, science, and Gullah Geechee culture into vivid focus. They also participated in culture and paint creating memories that will last a lifetime.
The visit offered a powerful introduction to how land, culture, and knowledge are deeply connected on the Sea Islands.
