Honoring Black History Month on St. Helena Island: Events That Celebrate Heritage

February is Black History Month. If you are looking for a way to celebrate the unique Gullah Geechee culture of St. Helena and the Sea Islands of South Carolina keep reading for events and activities happening across the community.

Saturday, February 15 – Community Sing for Black History Month Join the community for an uplifting evening of familiar hymns and spirituals led by Brick Baptist Church and Faith Memorial Baptist Church. 5:30 PM at Frissell Community House on the Penn Center campus.

Thursday, February 19 – Gullah/Geechee Black History Month with Queen Quet
A histo-musical presentation with Jayn Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, exploring Gullah/Geechee language and legacy. 5:30 PM at St. Helena Branch Library.

Saturday, February 21 – Black History Month Celebration at Penn Center This free, family-friendly event will take place on the Penn Center campus outdoors. Enjoy food, face painting, , and presentations honoring Black history and the living culture that continues to shape our community. 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on the Penn Center campus. This year’s entertainment lineup includes St. Helena Island native B.I.Z.O, also known as Gullah Child.

Saturday, February 21 - Harvesting Heritage: Gathering Ground
Daytime events are free and open to the public from 10:30 - 2:30. Evening events are ticketed and run rom 6:00 to 8:30 PM. Click here for details.

Saturday, February 28 – Beaufort in Black A black-tie cultural and commerce celebration featuring community networking and entertainment at Dataw Island Country Clubhouse. Hosted by the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce.

All Month Long – Passport to Freedom 250 USCB hosts a month-long series of activities open to students, faculty, staff, and community members that highlight Black history, heritage, and cultural impact in the Lowcountry through educational events, community engagement, and the “Passport to Freedom 250” exploration tour of historic sites. The series wraps up with two closing and awards receptions on Thursday, February 26 (6 PM-7 PM) at the Bluffton Campus and Friday, February 27 (6 PM-7 PM) at the Beaufort Campus, celebrating participation and recognizing contributions.
